About the Company

INFINITE MONSTER is an exciting new installation that invites participants to collectively create an ever-changing giant monster without seeing what each other are drawing. This interactive digital artwork is made in real time, based on the surrealist drawing game “Exquisite Corpse.”


In its original form, the Exquisite Corpse game involved participants drawing part of a character on a piece of paper, then folding the paper over so the next player cannot see what was drawn.  The next player then draws another part, and so on and so on. At the end of the game, the paper is unfolded, revealing a collectively created monster. The game started in about 1925 and was played by Surrealists Yves Tanguy, Marcel Duchamp and Joan Miro among others. It is still a popular drawing game, and its format has been also incorporated into creative writing exercises, used all over the world.

In Terrapin's version, three tents are set up in a public space around either a tower of screens or the presenter’s existing big screen. In each tent, a participant draws a part of a character on an iPad, for example a Viking’s head or a mermaid’s tail. As the character is drawn, the audience sees the surprising combinations emerge piece by piece on the screens. When the drawings are complete, the participants step out of their tent and see their collective creation projected high above them. Soon, another team enters the tents and another unique monster is created. This installation is a fun and unique way to activate an outdoor or lobby space with multi-media and creativity and to engage your community to use their imaginations to create new works of public art in real time.

Best for Grades: K+
Audience Size: Medium to Large, depending on space and observers. One new character (made up of three parts) is created on average every three and a half minutes. This equates to up to 17 characters per hour with at least 50 single participants; 300 participants per day. If participants are in pairs or groups, 450 participants are possible per day.

Terrapin makes contemporary puppetry for young audiences, touring nationally and internationally.  It creates work for theatres and interactive installations for public spaces, telling sophisticated stories of humor and pathos and embracing new technologies inspired by the age-old craft of puppetry.

Terrapin designs its productions to tour and aims to have its work presented to diverse audiences globally. Many of its works are designed so they can be presented in languages other than English through the engagement of local artists wherever the work is presented.


The company’s work has been presented by the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Art Space For Kids (Shanghai), The Walton Arts Centre, Vancouver International Children’s Festival, Taipei Children's Art Festival, Festival De Betovering (The Netherlands), Belfast International Children’s Festival, Lincoln Center (New York), Sydney Opera House and Melbourne International Arts Festival, amongst many others, and in 2017, the company presented a bespoke version of its interactive installation I Think I Can at the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon.

Minimum Technical Requirements

  • Load In Time: 8 hours. Once the AV has been installed (4 hours), Terrapin requires 4 hours on site before opening.

  • Crew Needs: The venue takes responsibility for the set up of the AV whether it be an existing screen on site or the construction of the screen tower. Once the AV has been installed, Terrapin requires one crew member to always be onsite to trouble shoot any technical problems.

  • Ideal Space Size: 65 ft width x 33 ft depth x 18 ft height (can be scaled and configured to work in virtually any space)

  • Power/Sound Needs: 2x 10amp 240v circuits; Basic 2x speaker PA system

  • Load Out Time: Terrapin requires 4 hours to load out its elements from the production.

  • The presenter must also provide five (5) front of house facilitators. As part of the load-in schedule, the company will provide a training session to these FoH facilitators. Ideally there will be continuity in FOH staff.
